Watercolor Riffs on Pages from James Thurber Books
  • Original works on paper by Philip Gladstone
  • About: From a long-running (ca. 2005-2017) series by the artist featuring spontaneous riffs on pages removed from vintage copies of books by James Thurber, incorporating Thurber's pre-printed illustrations into Gladstone's free-association, inventive compositions; the five available here were among the last of the series, sold to a private California collection and recently re-acquired by the artist from the original collector's estate
  • Made with watercolor, pen-and-ink and watercolor pencils on vintage book pages (A Thurber Carnival is on a page from the book of the same title; the remaining pieces are on pages from a book Thurber illustrated in 1938 entitled How to Raise a Dog: In the City...in the Suburbs)
  • Watercolors measure approx. 8 by 5 inches each (varies, see individual images above) including untrimmed edges as shown
  • Created in 2015-2017
  • Signed by the artist with his monogram cipher (PG), and again with his full name and inscribed with the title on the reverse
  • Custom framing by the artist available upon request Examples
