"On the Hook" is an original mixed-media work on paper by Philip Gladstone
  • On the Hook is a dream-like, mixed media 'mashup' reflecting our anxious times, drawing upon historic source images: Two twentieth-century photographs by American sociologist and photographer Lewis Hine↗, the first depicting a worker at the Empire State Building construction site↗, and the other immortalizing a ca. 1910 newsboy smoking↗; a U.S. Army photograph, dating from the Korean War, of one soldier comforting another after a loss↗; and, of course, illustrator James Montgomery Flagg's iconic Uncle Sam Army recruitment poster↗
  • Made with watercolor, pen-and-inks, colored pencils and Windsor & Newton pigmented markers with sgraffito (scraping) on clay-coated paper
  • Image measures 16-3/4 by 11-3/4 inches (as shown, sheet slightly larger)
  • Created in 2017
  • Provenance: Sold by the artist to a private California collection, 2017; re-acquired from the late collector's estate by Philip Gladstone Studio, 2023
  • Signed by the artist with his monogram cipher (PG) and dated "2017", lower left; signed again with the artist's full name and inscribed with the title on the reverse
