"Evening Song" is an original mixed-media work on paper by Philip Gladstone

  • Artist's note on this work's deliberately crafted appearance: Evening Song was created with layer upon layer of mixed-media, isolated by varnishes and hand-rubbed to achieve a rich, atmospheric, intentionally time-worn effect, with a satin finish and pentementi (the visible traces of earlier states of the work that have been changed and painted over) and subtly distressed passages; see detail images above
  • Inspired by and based upon a ca. 1880 photograph by Thomas Eakins, a study for his painting "Acadia" View the photo on Wikimedia Commons↗
  • Made with layered mixed-media (including graphite, pen-and-inks, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, and varnishes) on 150 lb Arches hot-press watercolor paper mounted to a second larger sheet of watercolor paper
  • Image measures 12 by 6-3/4 inches (as shown, sheet slightly larger)
  • Completed in 2025
  • Signed by the artist with his monogram cipher (PG), lower right; signed again with the artist's full name, dated and inscribed with the title on the reverse
