This work by Philip Gladstone appropriates the central figures from William-Adolphe Bouguereau's 1880 painting "Dante And Virgil In Hell" in the Musée d'Orsay, and reworks them with an overlay of form and color that openly borrows from the vocabulary of twentieth century modernist masters for expressive purposes
