"American Hercules" is an original acrylic painting on cradled panel by Philip Gladstone
  • Artist's note: "American Hercules" is a vivid, dream-like mashup of imagery borrowed and reimagined for this expressive original composition from disparate sources, including illustrator Perham Wilhelm Nahl's 1915 poster "The 13th Labor of Hercules"; a moving 1950 U.S. Army photograph of grief-stricken soldiers in the Korean War; Pablo Picasso's masterpiece "Guernica"; and loose references to Roy Lichtenstein's iconic "Whaam!", Mickey Mouse, vintage Coca-Cola advertising, and more
  • Made with artist's acrylic paints and touches of other media on a 3/4 inch deep cradled wooden panel, varnished with an archival UV-filtering gloss varnish
  • Image measures 16 by 12 inches
  • Created in May 2021
  • Signed by the artist with his monogram (PG) and dated "2021", lower right; signed again with his full name and inscribed with the title on the reverse
